Depeche Mode Concert History

Recently, I have been listening to a lot of Fall Out Boy, because I am quite in love with their latest album. I felt a bit weird to be listening to them at first, because I hadn’t listened to them since I was a teen. And there’s something a little embarrassing about listening to a band you used to listen to back then later on in your life. I do think Fall Out Boy has done a very good job changing their music and updating it to this day and to me their pop rock is very catchy and lovely to sing along to.

Originally a product of Britain's new romantic movement, Depeche Mode went on to become the quintessential electro pop band of the 1980s. One of the first acts to establish a musical identity based completely around the use of synthesizers, they began their existence as a bouncy dance-pop outfit but gradually developed a darker, more dramatic sound that ultimately positioned them as one of the.

But listening to new Fall Out Boy material after a long break made me think back to some of the other bands and songs I used to listen to. I felt a bit nostalgic and started looking for tracks that used to be big in the “emo” music scene of the 2000s. I wouldn’t necessarily listen to this music anymore, but it’s quite fun to take a trip down the memory lane and remember how dark and weird everything had to be back then.

I have compiled a Spotify playlist of some of these tracks which you can find below.

These are all actually quite catchy songs and I listen to some of these bands even to this day, although usually I prefer the newer material, because the old one has too much emotional package (aka painfully embarrassing teenage memories) attached to them.

More importantly, I have these bands to thank for my current music obsession. Even if I don’t listen to the exact same kind of music or same artists, music would have never become such a big part of my life without 30 Seconds to Mars (my first band obsession ever) and My Chemical Romance. Without AFI, I would have never learnt about the Cure, Joy Division and Depeche Mode. Or I would, but AFI helped me to listen to my father when he told me about all these bands, because in general you don’t want to listen to your parents when you are a teenager, even if they do have an awesome taste in music.

I hope this list brings forward lovely and embarrassing teen memories to all you other emo teens out there. Please feel free to comment below. I only included songs I remember listening to back in the day, but please do tell me, if you feel like I missed a song or if there’s a song that’s particularly important to you.

These are very exciting times for the fans of Depeche Mode. The new single ‘Heaven’ just came out last week and their 13th studio album ‘Delta Machine’ is being released on 26th of March. With Martin L. Gore stating that the album will have some of their best songs ’till now and Dave Gahan looking as handsome as always, they’re definitely still going strong. To celebrate the upcoming album, I’ve decided to make themed Depeche Mode playlists on Spotify for every week all the way to the release of the album, starting today with this masterlist of the sexiest songs the band has made throughout the years (the link at the top of the post takes you to the playlist).

To those of you, who think Depeche Mode is all about being in a dark emotional place and all that misery, this may come as a surprise, but Mr Gore has written quite many songs full of sexual tension. The darkness is still there yes, but it’s just making the songs even more exciting (or pervy, whichever you prefer…). Let me guide you to the mystical world of death and sex with the help of some racy Depeche Mode tracks.

Behind the Wheel
sweet little girl / I prefer / you behind the wheel / and me the passenger

In the wide catalog of Depeche Mode songs that are about sex, this is probably one of the most straightforward ones. It’s basically a five minute car metaphor for sex, where Gore is asking for the girl to be the driver for a change…

World in My Eyes
now let my body do the moving / and let my hands do the soothing / let me show you the world in my eyes

If you’ve ever seen a life performance of this particular song, you know it’s a steamy one. Who wouldn’t get excited at the thought of Dave Gahan taking you on a sexy trip around the world?

Master and Servant
domination’s the name of the game / in bed or in life / they’re both just the same

The lyrics of this song are all about finding parallels between S&M sex and the society. In the eyes of a casual observer, it seems like Mr Gore likes to be dominated…

Fly on the Windscreen
come here / kiss me / now

The darkness of Depeche Mode is very much present on this track and the whole ‘Black Celebration’ album. The song is about death and sex, which is a very interesting combination indeed. The sexiest part of the song? Martin Gore moaning “touch me” in between Gahan’s lines.

I Feel You
you take me there / you take me where / the kingdom comes

If I was asked to name the song with the sexiest guitar riff, I would definitely go for this one. Just the intro of the song is enough to give me goosebumps – in a sexy way of course.

Rush
hold out your delicate hands / and feel me

There’s something very sexy about Dave Gahan’s vocals at the time of ‘Songs of Faith And Devotion’. His vocals alone are enough to make any song on that particular album sexy, but there’s always something extra arousing in singing about crawling on the floor. Or that might just be me.

I Want You Now
reach out your hands / and accept my life / we’ve waited for too long

This song is here to prove us that creepy and sexy can go hand in hand. The song is almost terrifying with the Russian radio noises and the porn movie moaning. But if a song has Martin Gore singing with yearning about how he wants you now, it’s very difficult not to feel turned on by it.

Depeche Mode Songs

Dressed in Black
and I’m falling down again / down on the floor again / I’m begging for more again

As it seems to be a song about some sort of a dominatrix, this track continues with the theme of sexual domination, once again. I can see a pattern forming here.

Lie to Me

Something about the atmosphere of this song about asking for someone to tell you they love you even when they don’t just hits the sexy spot. Maybe it’s the darkness lurking around every beat. Maybe it’s the haunting backing vocals by Gore. Whatever it is, it’s working for this blogger.

This track definitely falls into the category of freaky and quite brutal songs that somehow turn out to be sexy. If there is such a category.

So yes, it’s a dark dark world, the world of Depeche Mode. But if you don’t mind a bit of creepiness, S&M, brutality and whatnot, it can also be quite a sexy one.
Also, feel free to comment and point out if I had forgotten some important definitely turn on track from the list (I do know there are lots of them out there, this is just a small collection of the seducing tunes penned by Mr Gore).
